The most neglected part in car care

  • by Benjamin Pan

In addition to the few gold contacts on the car's most important electrical connectors, most of the other connectors use copper-zinc alloys. Under normal conditions, its reliability is guaranteed, but if the car is exposed to high temperatures and humidity for long periods of time. In a bumpy environment, these joints may cause looseness, corrosion, and poor contact.

The daily maintenance of a car is closely related to the service life of the car and the working conditions, and the daily maintenance is not a general maintenance of the vehicle. In the specific operation process, the daily maintenance is always subdivided into the various parts of the vehicle. Maintenance, and all parts are maintained, the work of the vehicle will naturally improve. In many people's minds, maintenance is nothing more than the replacement of contaminants such as three filters and oil. In fact, during the operation of the vehicle, many parts are constantly worn out. The scope of routine maintenance and inspection is far from limited to three filters, oil, brake pads, spark plugs, etc. In many places, if you do not pay attention to inspection and maintenance at ordinary times, Indefinitely there will be unexpected failures. The following are several parts that are often overlooked in routine maintenance:

Fire line

Many people know that spark plugs need to be replaced on a regular basis, but they neglect the maintenance of other components of the ignition system. One of them is the ignition high-voltage line. When the engine is running, there are often tens of thousands of volts of high-voltage pulse currents on the ignition line. Because it operates in a high temperature, dusty, and vibration environment for a long time, it will inevitably occur aging or even damage. Therefore, like a spark plug, it is also a consumable item that requires frequent replacement. Aging and breakage of the ignition wire will greatly reduce the ignition energy, increase the engine oil consumption, decrease the power, and severely cause a fire break, which is a fatal failure for an engine with a three-way catalytic converter. According to foreign experience, even if there are no failures, a set of ignition high voltage lines need to be replaced every 20,000 kilometers. Many domestic car owners often have to wait until the engine appears to be unstable or even unable to start the fault, they only think of checking the ignition system, but at this time, the wasted fuel and engine wear caused by the potential damage to the ignition system components have far exceeded. Its own value. In addition, parts such as distributor caps, distributor heads, ignition coils, and spark plug plugs in the ignition system should also be within the scope of routine maintenance and inspection.

Brake disc

The brake disc and the brake shoe are a pair of friction pairs. The brake shoe wears and the brake disc wears too. This principle is very simple, but many people only pay attention to the replacement of the shoe when servicing the vehicle. , but often neglected to replace the brake disc. The consequences of excessive wear on the brake disc are very serious. First, due to the reduced surface flatness, the actual contact area becomes smaller, resulting in insufficient braking force; in addition, the brake disc heat capacity after wear is reduced, and the brake is continuously braked. When the temperature rises quickly, it is more likely to cause thermal decay. All of these are very dangerous while driving. Some repair shops put the heavily worn brake discs on the lathe for surface treatment, commonly known as “discs,” so that the surface is flat, but the disc becomes thinner and the thermal decay during braking becomes more serious. In addition, the high temperatures generated during the process will anneal the brake disc, further reducing the mechanical strength. In general, after two or three brake shoe replacements, the brake disk should also be replaced. Don't feel bad about these hundreds of dollars. After all, human life is priceless.

Generator Bearing

Many repairmen are now jokingly referred to as "loaders", meaning that they will only change parts and will not repair them. In fact, as long as some parts are maintained according to regulations, their life span can be greatly extended. Generators are one of them. Several years ago, the generator was still an expensive component in the car. At that time, there was a whole set of maintenance regulations for the generator in the automobile maintenance regulations, such as timely lubrication, replacement of bearings, adjustment, replacement of carbon brushes, and adjustment of touch. Point gaps, etc. Now that the price of spare parts has been reduced, routine maintenance of generators has gradually been neglected. In fact, if the bearings are inspected and replaced as described above, the life of the generator can be extended by at least 1 time. In general, after the vehicle has traveled 60,000 to 80,000 kilometers, the generator should be overhauled. In addition, the bearings of the water pump, power steering pump, and air-conditioning compressor should also be inspected periodically.

Therefore, during routine maintenance, check the joints of the computer, sensors, nozzles, etc. on the car. If loosening or rust is found, you may use Vaseline to dispose of it or replace it with a new one.

From a use point of view, the chassis components are actually more prone to problems than the engine, and the parts where the chassis is prone to failure are mainly concentrated on:

Shock absorber

Leakage is a sign of damage to the shock absorber. In addition, bumping on a bad road or increasing the braking distance is also a sign of damage to the shock absorber.

Suspension control arm sleeve

After the rubber sleeve is damaged, the vehicle will experience a series of failures such as deviation and play, even if four-wheel positioning is not effective. If you examine the chassis carefully, damage to the rubber sleeve is easy to spot.

Steering lever

Turning the lever loose is a serious safety hazard. Therefore, during routine maintenance, this area must be carefully inspected. The procedure is very simple: hold the lever and shake it vigorously. If it is not shaken, it means that everything is normal. Otherwise, you should replace the ball or rod assembly.

exhaust pipe

The exhaust pipe is one of the most easily damaged parts of the vehicle. Don't forget to take a look at the inspection. Especially exhaust pipes with catalytic converters should be carefully examined.
